Most people know Krabi for its tall limestone cliffs and green-blue water. But very few ask: Why is it called “Krabi”?
In Thai, Krabi means “Sword.”
It sounds strange to name a quiet beach place after a weapon, right? But the story of the name is interesting, with old stories, local beliefs, and a little mystery. Here are 3 stories about the name.
1. The Sacred Sword Story (The Most Popular Story)
This is the story people in Krabi like the most. You can even see it on the official logo.
Long ago, when the town was built, villagers found two old swords in the ground – one big and one small.
In Thai culture, finding these swords meant luck and power. People thought the swords were holy, so they named the town Krabi (Sword). Today, the province still uses two crossed swords as its symbol.
2. The Monkey Story (Ban Thai Samo)
Before Krabi, this area was called Ban Thai Samo.
In old records, this town was one of twelve royal cities, and its zodiac sign was the Monkey.
Some historians think that over many years, the monkey symbol and the old names slowly changed into the word we use today. This story is less dramatic than the sword story, but it shows Krabi has a very old history.
3. The Lumphi Tree Story
There is also a tree story. A local tree called Lumphi (or Lumphu) grows a lot in this area.
Long ago, Malay and Chinese merchants trading at this port tried to say the tree’s name. They said it wrong, like “Ka-lu-bi” or “Kho-lo-bi.” After many years, the local people changed the sound, and Ka-lu-bi became Krabi.
From Stories to History: The King’s Approval
The stories explain the name, but a King made it official.
Krabi used to be a small town under bigger cities. During King Chulalongkorn’s time (Rama V) in the late 1800s, the King saw that Krabi was important for trade and elephants.
He made Krabi a province, separate from Nakhon Si Thammarat. That is how the town of the sword became the Krabi province we know today.
