Trip to Ko Phi Phi: Leave from Krabi or from Phuket?

If there is one island in Thailand that we truly recommend from the heart, it is Phi Phi Island.

This island is a place many people think they know from photos, but seeing it in real life is even more beautiful and surprising.

Many travelers don’t realize that Phi Phi is actually part of Krabi, not Phuket. This means trips from Krabi are easier, faster, and perfect for anyone looking for a simple day trip with stunning views.

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about Phi Phi Island – the best spots, tips for visiting, and how to make your trip unforgettable. Ready to explore?

What to expect on a trip to Ko Phi Phi?

This is a full day trip with many stops, swimming, and snorkeling. You will see beaches, views, and ride boats the whole day. It’s fun, but also tiring, so we recommend keeping the next day free to relax.

The Phi Phi Islands are one of the most popular places in Thailand, so you will see many tourists all year round. Most tours use speedboats, but on calm days the trip may be done with a longtail boat.

The tour includes around : 7 beautiful stops in amazing natural spots.

Important to know: Some people skip this trip because it is long and very crowded, and it’s not for everyone. If you prefer a quiet day, you can book a private trip with fewer stops or leave earlier.

There are also other great options in Krabi, like a private tour to Hong Island.

But if you don’t want to miss the views and beauty of Phi Phi, we totally understand!

The 7 stops on the Phi Phi trip

Note: the order of the stops may change depending on tide conditions, sea conditions, and the number of visitors at the different sites.

Maya Bay

This is the most famous stop of the trip – a beautiful bay with turquoise water, white sand, and high cliffs.

The boat stops at the back of the island, and swimming is not allowed. After COVID, the area was closed for nature recovery, so now they protect it very carefully and do not let boats enter the bay. When we visited, we even saw baby sharks.

It’s one of the most impressive spots of the tour. Your camera will love it, but make sure to enjoy the view with your own eyes too.

Pileh Lagoon

A beautiful lagoon surrounded by tall cliffs. The boat will slowly enter deep into the lagoon, and if conditions allow, you can enjoy a short, refreshing swim in the calm, clear water.

Loh Samah Bay

A small, quiet bay located south of Maya Bay, with shallow, clear water. Usually, this will be a short stop for snorkeling and swimming in the beautiful water, depending on sea conditions.

Monkey Beach

A beautiful stretch of beach! White sand, and if you’re lucky, you can see quite a few monkeys roaming among the rocks, in the trees, and even on the beach itself.

Usually, the viewing is done from the boat, and if you go down to the beach, make sure not to bring phones or expensive equipment with you, or keep them very safe.

Bamboo Island

A beautiful white beach! A flat and open island, stunning clear water, turquoise colors. One of the calm stops on the trip – with free time for swimming, photography, or a quiet walk on the beach. One of our favorite places.

Snorkeling stop

Stopping for snorkeling in one of the areas, the stop varies depending on sea conditions, but know that there is a stop intended for snorkeling.

Phi Phi Don

The main and most populated island in the Phi Phi Islands. Here you’ll find all the hotels, restaurants, and bars on the island. This is a stop for lunch and free time – you can sit in a café, walk around the local shops, or just rest by the sea.

*Usually, the restaurant is located in the less central part of the island. If you’re interested, you can take a quick walk to the other side to see the hotel area and the additional beach.

A shared trip to Phi Phi will include:

Pickup and drop-off, speedboat ride, English-speaking local guide, snorkeling equipment, life jackets, lunch (Thai buffet), fresh fruit, drinking water throughout the day, entrance fees to the national park, and insurance from the operating company.

What else should you know?

A shared trip to : Ko Phi Phi is a fun way to meet new people, see many islands, and enjoy the nature around you.
But keep in mind – it’s a long day with long boat rides, and the shared boats usually have 25-45 people on board. We don’t say this to scare you, but so you won’t be surprised by the crowds.

If you’re traveling with small kids : Don’t enjoy long boat rides, or prefer quieter places, Krabi has other peaceful island trips too – like Hong Islands or the 4 Islands.

If you still don’t want to miss Ko Phi Phi : You can also do it privately. It’s more expensive, but great for couples, families, or groups who want a special experience. You can choose a longtail boat (if the sea is calm), a simple speedboat, or a premium trip with our captain Rin, who knows every corner of the islands.

In short – Whether you choose a shared or private trip, a day at the Phi Phi Islands will give you beautiful memories and amazing photos to take home.
