Kaeng Som (Sour Curry) with Sea Bass - spicy level 8/10

One of Krabi’s signature dishes is the southern sour curry with sea bass. The yellow curry is made from turmeric, fresh chilies, and local herbs. At the first sip, you can taste the sour, spicy, and flavorful southern spices. The sea bass is cut into bite-size pieces, cooked perfectly, not fishy or soft. The spicy and sour curry matches the natural sweetness of the fish. Eat it with hot rice and it’s amazing. If you come to Krabi and do not try this dish, you miss an important local taste.

Don’t eat fish? No problem! Chicken, pork, or beef work well too. For beef, choose tender cuts like shank or sirloin.

Tip: If you want to experience eating like a true southern Thai, try pairing Kai Jeow (Thai-style omelet) with Kaeng Som (sour curry). The soft, fluffy omelet balances the spicy and sour curry perfectly. You can also try Kai Jeow Cha-Om, an omelet made with Cha-Om leaves (a local herb with a unique taste). It adds a slightly fragrant and savory flavor that makes the dish even more interesting and tasty.

Som Tum (Papaya Salad) - spicy level 8/10

som tum

Som Tum is a famous spicy dish that you may know. It has a sour, salty, and sweet taste all in one plate. Each region has its own style, like Thai Som Tum which is mild and easy to eat, or spicy Crab and Fermented Fish Som Tum from Isan. You can choose how spicy you want. Usually, foreigners like 1-2 chilies, which is not very hot. Thai people usually eat about 7-10 chilies, which can be shocking for some! If you want to try, go ahead, but maybe have some tissue ready. Even though Som Tum is not a southern dish, you can easily find it in Krabi. People who try it usually love the strong Thai spicy taste.

Tip:  Can eat also with khanom jeen (rice noodles) and add some vegetable

Pad Ped Moo Pa (Stir-Fried Wild Boar with Spices) - spicy level 7- 8

This is another spicy dish you must try. Fresh wild boar is cut into bite-size pieces and stir-fried with southern curry paste, fresh chilies, galangal, lemongrass, and kaffir lime leaves. The taste is spicy and fragrant, but still balanced with the sauce. Every bite gives you a bit of the boar’s crispy texture and strong curry flavor.

Stir-fried spicy wild boar can be replaced with beef, chicken, pork, or even duck. The overall flavor changes slightly depending on the meat, but the spiciness and aroma of the curry paste stay the same.

Tip: eat it with stir-fried mixed vegetables with mushrooms, which is really delicious. It’s an interesting option to try!

Gai Pad Kapi Sataw (Chicken Stir-fry with Shrimp Paste and Bitter Beans) - spicy level 8/10 for real brave people

This is a real southern Thai dish with strong spicy, salty, and fragrant flavors. Fresh chicken pieces are stir-fried with shrimp paste, which gives a rich salty taste, and sataw beans, which have a slightly strong smell that adds a special touch to the dish. It is cooked with fresh chili, garlic, and herbs, giving a pleasant-smelling and spicy flavor.
This dish may not be well known to foreigners or Thai people from other regions because sataw is a local plant from the south, but it is a dish that spicy food lovers should not miss. The combination of spicy, salty, and slightly bitter flavors from the sataw makes this dish very tasty and memorable.

You can change the protein in the dish however you like – shrimp, pork, squid, or even beef. The texture will be different, but the unique aroma and bitterness of the bitter beans remain.

Namthip’s Tip: I usually order sticky rice to eat with it .The sticky rice helps reduce the spiciness of this menu  and it tastes so yummy.
